A Legacy Written in Red Roses: Megan & Chris’s Carmel Mission Wedding
There are weddings that are beautiful, and then there are weddings that mean something. Megan and Chris’s celebration at the Carmel Mission Basilica and Mission Ranch was firmly, unforgettably, and getting to be their planner for this one was the kind of privilege that reminds me exactly why I do this work.
When the Location Chooses You
Megan and Chris live in Georgia, but Carmel-by-the-Sea wasn’t just a destination they picked off a Pinterest board, it was the place her Italian family has called home since the early 1900s. Her grandparents got engaged on that same Pacific beach. Multiple generations honeymooned here. Chris himself had his “I’m going to marry her” moment right here in Carmel, so when it came time to plan their wedding, there was never really a question of where.
That kind of story sets the entire tone for how I approach planning. This wasn’t about building a wedding from a mood board, it was about honoring something that already existed.
Planning a Destination Wedding From 2,000 Miles Away
Long-distance wedding planning is genuinely one of the most creative logistical puzzles there is, and Megan and Chris tackled it with so much grace. From the very beginning, they were intentional about designing a full weekend for their guests, not just a single day. We opened the festivities with a beach welcome party at the exact spot where Megan’s grandparents had gotten engaged decades earlier.
The rehearsal dinner was equally layered with meaning. Megan carried her great-grandmother’s purse and wore a 1915 necklace from Chris’s great-grandmother.
The Ceremony: Carmel Mission Basilica
There are few ceremony venues in the world with the presence of the Carmel Mission Basilica. Built in 1797, it is one of the most stunning Spanish Colonial structures on the California coast, and it carries a weight and history that instantly elevates any celebration held within its walls.
The Aesthetic: Moody Summer Heat
Megan and Chris were a refreshing reminder that wedding aesthetics have no rules. Their vision was what Megan called “moody summer heat” — deep red, cobalt blue, silver, and heavy textures. Bold and intentional.
The florals from Love and Flowers by Angie brought this to life in the most stunning way. Deep red roses appeared on everything from the ceremony to the custom stationery (complete with matching stamps, designed by Truly Engaging) to the wedding cake by Village Baking Company. The overall effect was rich, romantic, and completely their own.
The Reception: Mission Ranch
If you don’t know Mission Ranch, Clint Eastwood’s active ranch and hotel just minutes from the Mission, add it to your list immediately! It is one of those venues that does something to you the moment you arrive. The views, the warmth, the sense of place, and the iconic sheep, all work together in a way that is uniquely Carmel.
The send-off felt exactly right: guests went home with bags of “Carmel” candies handmade by Megan’s mother and grandmother. A literal, edible piece of family history to carry home from the coast.
