Best Time of Year to Get Married in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Newlywed couple sits together overlooking the ocean at sunset.

If you’ve fallen in love with the idea of a Carmel-by-the-Sea wedding, the cypress trees, the fog rolling off the ocean, the cobblestone streets lined with roses, the next question is almost always: When?

The Monterey Peninsula is genuinely stunning in every season, but the truth is, the time of year you choose will shape your entire wedding experience. After planning weddings all along the Carmel coast, from Big Sur to Pebble Beach to the heart of the village, here’s what I tell every couple who asks.

Carmel’s Weather: What You Actually Need to Know

Before we get into seasons, let’s talk about something no one warns you about: the marine layer.

Carmel-by-the-Sea sits right on the Pacific coast, which means fog is a real factor, especially in the mornings and late evenings. This isn’t a deal-breaker. In fact, most couples end up loving the moody, cinematic quality it gives their photos. But if your heart is set on a sunset ceremony with a clear horizon, timing matters.

The climate here is mild year-round, typically ranging from the high 50s in winter to the low 70s in peak summer. It’s not a place known for extreme heat or harsh winters, which is honestly one of the reasons it’s such a dream for outdoor weddings.

Season-by-Season Breakdown

Spring in Carmel (March – May): The Secret Gem

Spring is one of the most underrated times to get married in Carmel, and I’ll be honest — it’s a personal favorite.

After the rainy season, the hills are vividly green, wildflowers are blooming along the coast, and the gardens throughout Carmel village are in full display. The light in April and May is soft and golden in a way that’s almost unfair to photographers.

What to expect:

  • Temperatures in the mid-60s, with some warmer afternoons in May

  • Occasional rain still possible in March and early April

  • Venue availability is better than summer, with more flexibility on dates

  • Pricing tends to be more competitive than peak season

Best for: Couples who want lush, romantic scenery without summer crowds or pricing. If you’re eyeing venues like Holman Ranch, Carmel Valley Ranch, or any of the private estate properties, spring is a smart window.

Summer in Carmel (June – August): Peak Season, Peak Consideration

Summer is the peak wedding season on the Monterey Peninsula, and for good reason. Longer days, warm afternoons, and the buzz of a thriving tourist destination make it feel celebratory before the party even starts.

That said, June in Carmel can be foggy. The phenomenon locals call “June Gloom” is real, marine layer tends to sit along the coast through late morning, sometimes not burning off until early afternoon. If your ceremony is at 10am overlooking the water, you may be exchanging vows in a soft white mist. Some couples love this. Others don’t.

July and August typically offer clearer skies and warmer, more reliable afternoons.

What to expect:

  • High competition for top venues — book 12–18 months in advance for summer dates

  • Crowds in Carmel village (especially on weekends) — plan transportation accordingly

  • Stunning long daylight hours; golden hour in August can stretch past 8pm

Best for: Couples who want the classic California summer experience and are planning well in advance. If a Big Sur wedding is on your list, summer gives you the best odds of clear Pacific views.

Fall in Carmel (September – November): The Best-Kept Secret

If you ask most Carmel-based wedding planners what their favorite wedding season is, fall is going to come up more than once — and I’m no exception.

September and October are arguably the best months to get married on the Monterey Peninsula. The summer fog has cleared, the light turns warm and amber, the crowds thin out, and the landscape takes on a rich, golden quality that feels made for weddings.

Big Sur in October is on another level entirely. The redwoods, the coastal cliffs, the afternoon light — it’s the kind of scenery that doesn’t need a filter.

What to expect:

  • Temperatures still warm through October, often into the low 70s

  • Clear skies and low fog probability — the best window for guaranteed views

  • Slightly reduced vendor demand, which can work in your favor for negotiations

  • Wine country connections: Carmel Valley harvest season overlaps perfectly

Best for: Couples who want the most reliable weather, the richest scenery, and slightly less competition for venues and vendors. This is the sweet spot.

Winter in Carmel (December – February): Moody, Intimate, Magical

Winter weddings in Carmel are not for everyone and they’re absolutely perfect for some couples.

The rainy season means outdoor ceremonies carry more risk, and you’ll want solid backup plans with any venue you book. But between rain events, winter days on the Monterey Peninsula can be crisp, clear, and breathtakingly beautiful. The coast feels quieter. The village feels like yours.

For intimate weddings, micro-weddings, and elopements, winter is genuinely underrated. The pricing is at its most accessible, availability is wide open, and there’s something deeply romantic about a small ceremony tucked into the heart of Carmel village when the rest of the world isn’t watching.

What to expect:

  • Higher chance of rain, especially January and February

  • The lowest venue and vendor pricing of the year

  • Uncrowded streets and beaches — you can actually have Carmel to yourself

  • Holiday weekends (especially New Year’s Eve) are an exception — those book up fast

Best for: Intimate ceremonies, elopements, and couples who love a moody coastal aesthetic. If your vision is candlelit and close, winter delivers beautifully.

A Few Things That Matter More Than Season

The honest truth? I’ve seen stunning weddings in every single month of the year in Carmel. Weather can surprise you in either direction, a gray October day, a sparkling February afternoon. A few things will serve you better than optimizing the calendar:

  • Choose a venue with a real backup plan. Any outdoor venue on the coast should have a weather contingency. Ask about it specifically before you sign anything.

  • Know your fog window. If an ocean-view ceremony is non-negotiable, plan your ceremony start time for the afternoon, not the morning, regardless of season.

  • Work with local vendors. A photographer, florist, and planner who have worked in Carmel across seasons will guide your timeline, your setup, and your expectations in ways that Google can’t.
